Chantilly Roofing Company – Re-shingling Pros and Cons

If you are in the market for a new roof or a roof replacement then there are lots of different things that you need to think about.  First, you need to decide what kind of roof you want to replace the old with.  Do you want traditional shingles, the newer dimensional look which cost a bit more, or something totally different?  Do you want to do an environmentally friendly roofing material or something like metal that won’t require lots of maintenance and will last for a great number of years?  All of these are just the first step in getting a new roof.
If you decide to replace your roof with traditional 3-tab or dimensional shingles then you have another thought to ponder.  Will you have the Chantilly roofing company do a roof removal and tear off the old shingles or will you simply have them re-shingle over the current ones that are on your home?  There are pros and cons to both of these things!

The main pro in re-shingling is that it is less costly than tearing off the old shingles and totally recovering the roof of the home.  With re-shingling the roofers simply go up on your roof and put new shingles over the top of the existing shingles.  This process doesn’t take long and shouldn’t cost a lot, but it has LOTS of cons.

The cons of re-shingling are great.  First of all, if the Chantilly roofing company simply puts the new shingles on top of the old, they aren’t tearing off the old shingles and underlying paper to see what kinds of repairs need to be made to your roof foundation.  Perhaps there are some rotting boards that need to be replaced.  There could be water damage that you wouldn’t have known about and that could have got much worse had you not pulled off the old shingles and found the problem prior to replacing the shingles.  Although doing a roof removal and taking off the old and replacing with new cost more, it can be much less expensive in the long run because of problems such as those listed above.  That leaky roof or rotted wood that could occur if you choose to simply slap on some shingles over the old could end up costing much more than tearing it off and replacing it!
